What is silent suffering and how does it impact our families?
Silent suffering is defined as the act of self-silencing or denying the authentic self the opportunity for growth and development. Self-silencing is the tendency to limit self-expression and prioritize others' needs and feelings, often to avoid conflict or maintain relationships. Additionally, constantly suppressing the authentic self can lead to being disconnected to one’s own feelings and needs, and therefore, not actively growing according to their truest desires. This internalized psychological distress, coupled with adverse social determinants of health, perpetuates a vicious cycle that has the potential to keep people from taking steps to improve their quality of life. It can result in negative health outcomes, including mental and physical health challenges.
